Sankofa is a Ghanian term which means, “to go back and get it”. The symbol – a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted forward and its head turned backwards captures the belief that the past must serve as a guide for planning the future. It is the wisdom in learning from the past that ensures a strong future.
The Burt Clark Foundation (BCF) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 2021 to honor the memory of Burt Clark, who firmly believed that each of us has a responsibility to ensure the success of the next generation. Born and raised in Natchitoches, Louisiana, Burt graduated from Natchitoches Central High School and went on to graduate from Southern University & A&M College in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During a life-altering trip to Africa, Burt was introduced to Sankofa. Although a new term, it was the definition of a belief system that naturally aligned with his upbringing, having been raised in a tight knit family and a small community. Burt also understood success for future generations was dependent on first taking care of self. For him, this meant committing to changing the way he viewed his physical health and pledging to live a healthier lifestyle. Burt became an avid runner and competed in several triathlons. He encouraged, inspired, and motived everyone he knew to do the same.
Burt was also a lifelong learner and believed “education is the passport to the future, and tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” His untimely passing in 2021 was a devastating blow to every person who knew and loved him. In an effort to continue his legacy, BCF through various fundraising events seeks to fund annual college scholarships awarded to deserving high school seniors, as well as continue Burt’s advocacy for living an active and healthy lifestyle.
